"This area of Maui is called Wai'opai and is part of Haleakala Ranch, the largest cattle ranch on Maui. It's interesting to note that the first cowboys in the "West" were not in the wild, wild West of the United States, but in the Kingdom of Hawai'i. Capt. George Vancouver brought the first cattle to Hawai'i in 1794. Those cattle multiplied rapidly and ate everything in sight, so cowboys from Mexico were brought in to deal with them and teach the Hawaiians the skills needed. Since they spoke Español, the Hawaiians called them paniolo, and paniolo they still are today."
